After someone has been in a car accident, the chances are high they suffered a hyperextension/ hyperflexion injury or more commonly known as whiplash. Studies have shown the sooner the person seeks active treatment for the injuries, the better the results are for the patient. So, if you know someone who has been in a car wreck encourage them to go see their doctor sooner rather than later. It is easier said than done. Everyone thinks they will heal...just give it time. However, this thinking can prolong recovery. Be pro-active with your own health.

According to this study: Active Intervention in Patients with Whiplash-Associated Disorders Improves Long-Term Prognosis. Spine 2003; 28 (22):2491-2498. Authors: Rosenfeld M, Seferiadis A, Carlsson J, Gunnarsson R, early treatment after whiplash injuries helped to prevent scar tissue adhesion formations at the injury site through mobilization of tissues and nerves. Active treatment helps patients overcome the fear of mobility and serious re-injury. This is a psychological aspect that helps patients improve quicker. Having a professional monitor and interact with supportive healthcare during the early weeks reassures good outcomes. The sooner after injury treatment begins increases regional blood flow and cell nutrition that increases movement.

This study included patients who all suffered from a motor vehicle accident whiplash injuries. The patients were divided into four different groups: 1-active intervention initiated within 96 hours after injury, 2-Standard intervention initiated within 96 hours post-injury, 3-Active intervention initiated 14 days post-injury, and 4-Standard intervention initiated 14 days post-injury. The patients were assessed at 3 months, 6 months and 3 years after the injury for head, neck, and shoulder pain. The results were clear. Those patients who received early and active treatment for their injuries improved their long term results.
